About Me

About Me

While it’s said that math people tend to be left-brained and English people tend to be right-brained, I’m a blend of both. I graduated magna cum laude from BYU-Idaho in 2007 in English and mathematics education and have taught a mixture of both subject areas for over a decade. As such, I understand logical, analytical, and sequential operations while also valuing imagination, creativity, and the big picture of a project.

In 2011, I received my M.A. in English from Idaho State University (4.0 GPA). My thesis and much of my coursework emphasized rhetoric and composition. I love rhetoric, the art of effective communication. Whether it be a simple brochure, advanced research, literature, business, course announcements, or anything in between, I love to write, to polish, and to connect with my audience.

The rhetorical triangle informs all of my writing and editing decisions. There are three essential components to good writing: ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is employed to establish a writer’s credibility by demonstrating knowledge and expertise, establishing common ground, and displaying fairness about the content. Pathos appeals to the audience’s emotions. Writers can connect with their audience by using descriptive and concrete language, applying figurative language, appealing to the audience’s needs and wants, and drawing on strong and meaningful emotions. Logos appeals to logic through the message’s use of facts, effective research, reasoning, examples, and precedents.

Simplified version of the rhetorical triangle

When it comes to applying the rhetorical triangle, one of the essential elements is understanding the audience. Given my experience as an instructor, understanding people is my specialty. Over the past decade, I’ve taught students varying in ages from 13-81, five years of which as an ESL professor for international students. My students have come from almost every walk of life imaginable from all over the world. And I, as their instructor, have had to find a way to connect to each of them on a personal basis. I know people.

In addition to teaching, I’ve edited professionally for Bitesize, LLC, and more recently as a freelance writer and editor. No matter the writing content, I invite you to collaborate with me so that together we can give your content maximum impact.
